Institute Plans Curriculum For Water Resources Management
The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, has said that it would develop a curriculum for water resource management in Nigeria.
The Director of the institute, Dr Olusanjo Bamboye, told The Tide last week, that the curriculum would ensure that institutions were current in the development of water resources and its management.
“The world is looking at integrated water management as a process for planning and developing water resources”.
“We should not limit ourselves to the engineering aspect alone, but we need to focus on the socio-economic benefits in water resources.’’
He identified the socio-economic benefits of water as comprising fishery, irrigation, navigation, drinking, exportation, industrial usage and waste disposal.
The Director said that the curriculum would enable those at the vocational and technical levels to acquire knowledge in the operation and management of resources through the application of integrated water resources management.
Bamboye said that the institute would ensure that all other institutes in the country adhere to the new curriculum as well as improve on the maintenance and replacement of water resources for sustainable development in the country.
He said the institute was collaborating with UNESCO to develop the curriculum due to the need to develop water resources in Nigeria.
He also disclosed that a five-day seminar on Modular curriculum Development for technical and postgraduate students on water education would hold in Kaduna from June 27 to July 1.
