NGO Seeks Behavioural Change In Youths
Community Health,
Education and Development in Africa, an NGO, has urged the Federal Government to use agencies to effect behavioural change in youths ahead of the April elections.
Dr Clifford Okafor, the executive director of the NGO, made the appeal in an interview newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He said the government should use its agencies and NGO’s faith-based organisations to introduce programmes aimed at bringing about behavioural change.
He said such programme should make youths to realise the dangers of being used to cause chaos before and during the elections.
The director said mothers, in particular, should be used to educate their children on the need to shun violence and all other indecent behaviours, noting that “they are the ones to lose or get killed eventually”.
He called on the governments and all development agencies to support church programmes that involved educating women on the need to inculcate behavoural change in their children.
“If they (children) change, if they just go and vote and are not involved in mayhem, disruption or carting off of ballot boxes, they will live to enjoy themselves.
“ This is very important because if we do not take behavior change programme to all every nook and cranny and to all meetings, thing are likely to remain they way they are,’’ Okafor warned.
Okafor said that in 2007, his group carried out a similar campaign in 100 volatile communities in Anambra State, using mostly churches and youth organisations to preach behavioural change.
“ The women used their powers as mothers to mobilise their children on the need for behavior change. It was a huge success because in the 19 places we visited during the 2007 elections in Anambra State, there was no violence,’’ he observed.
He called for the involvement of the three tiers of government, NGOs and faith-based organisations to preach behavior change before, during and after the April election.
“There should be total involvement of all agencies and NGOs in this programme because that is the only way we can have credible elections without skirmishes,’’ he said.
