Shell Gives N6m To Students
The Obonoma Community Trust (OCT) of the Akuku Toru Cluster Development Board under the Shell Memorandum of Understanding (SMOU) has dolled out the sum of six million Naira as bursaries to 120 tertiary students of the community.
Presenting the cheques to the students at a brief ceremony in Port Harcourt, the Honourable member representing Akuku Toru Constituency 11 in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Onari Brown described the ceremony as the first of its kind in the community.
Hon. Brown said that the ceremony has shown that the people of Obonoma are beginning to appreciate the value of education.
The lawmaker who is also the House Committee Chairman on Information, urged the beneficiaries to inform their parents of the social levy which he said will qualify future beneficiaries of the state government programmes.
He charged the people to participate actively in the forthcoming voters registration exercise as that will qualify them to vote in the forth coming elections.
Hon. Brown further used the occasion to advise the beneficiaries to put the money into judicious use.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Obonoma Community Trust, Mr. Jolly Jonah explained the programme was designed to help poor parents to solve the educational problems of their children.
He said that the committee planned to increase the bursary to N70,000 next year as well as provide overseas master degree programme for indigenes of the community.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to The Tide expressed gratitude to the committee for the gesture and promised to use the money for the purpose meant for.
