Group Condemns Attacks On Prominent Bayelsans
The Executive Director of Niger Delta Development Monitoring and Corporate Watch (NIDDEMCOW), a civil society group, Chief Nengi James, has condemned the incessant attacks on the country homes of prominent Bayelsa indigenes saying that such acts portend dangers to development of the state.
Chief Nengi’s reaction is coming on the heels of the recent attack on the country home of Chief Timi Alaibe, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs at Opokuma town in the Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area of the state.
Chief Nengi, a former Ijaw youth leader and notable Niger Delta activist, regretted the negative impacts the previous attacks on the homes of HRM Edmund Daukoru, the Speaker, RT Hon. Nestor Binabo , Chief Rufus Abadi, Chief (Major) Adigio, HRH Amalatei Turner, Hon. Waripamowei Dudafa, Rt. Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi and Chief Reginald Dede, was having on the state.
Making his view public in a press statement, which was distributed to journalists in the state, the human right activist urged the state government to identify the sponsors and perpetrators of the heinous acts and their motives, adding that the duty of government is to protect lives and property of the people.
While reiterating that youth employment and remodification of the amnesty programme and the implementation of the Ledum Mitee-led Niger Delta Technical Committee recommendations are very crucial to peace in the Niger Delta, he called on government and security agencies to live up to expectation.
He expressed fear on the consequences of the attacks coming few months to the 2011 general elections and pleaded with politicians to play the game according to the rules without rancor and acrimony to avoid rocking the political boat.
