Security Matters: Akpabio Urges Retreat For Politicians
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has called on the National Defence College to mount retreat for elected political officers on security matters.
He made the call in Uyo when Officers of the National Defence College, Course 18 led by Brig.Gen. John Zaruwa paid him a courtesy visit.
Akpabio said the college was in a position to organise a retreat for elected president, vice president, governors, deputy governors and other elected officers on the intricacies of security matters.
“It is important to invite the past presidents or governors and serving ones for security seminars.
“This will enable them learn the do’s and don’ts in security because certain things can compromise national security,” Akpabio said.
“We must defend our territory, our economy and defend the country,” he added.
He promised that his administration would support the college to enable it function optimally.
On State Police Force, the governor said, “until such a time Nigeria can see the need to practice true democracy as it is done abroad without fear.
“We will even have municipal police which are called the local government police. That is where community policing becomes essential.
“I think it is time to deregulate and allow the states to have their own police force,’’ Akpabio said.
Earlier, the team leader, Brig-Gen. John Zaruma told the governor that the team was in the state to look at the development strides of the government.
Zaruma said that since security bordered on economic, shelter and environmental issues, the visit was to expose the participants to the people.
The National War College, Lagos now National Defence College, Abuja was founded in 1992 to train officers in Nigeria and six other sister states in Africa. The college had graduated 1013 officers.
