Delay, Shoddy Job Mar Transportation On Choba Road
Residents of Choba community in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State have challenged the contractor handling the on-going dualisation of the Rumuokwuta-Choba road on slow pace of work and poor quality of drainages being executed on the project.
In a press statement signed by Solomon Ovunda, on behalf of “concerned citizens of the community, the people decried the slow pace and poor quality of job so far done by the contractors which they say have marved free flow of transportation and would adversely affect the people and their generations yet unborn.
The statement further argued that if the drainages and the quality of the road are not constructed according to the approved specifications of the state Ministry of Works, the drainages would not effectively check floods along the route and its adjourning communities.
Citing the importance of the road to the socio-economic well-being of the people, especially as it serves as the link road across Akpor Kingdom, the people charged the contractors to expedite action and improve on the quality of job that would stand the test of time.
They commended the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, for awarding the contract for the construction of the road which is regarded as a trunk ‘B’ road to an indigenous contractor as part of its capacity building efforts.
It would be recalled that recently the Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, during an inspection visit to the road construction site assured to persuade the contractors to expedite actions on the project as the dry season is setting in, so as to end the suffering faced by commuters and road users due to delay in the pace of work.
Staff of the contracting firm declined to comment on the community’s allegations, saying they are not competent to address the press on the issue.
