Abia Has Exceeded Political Quota For Women
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia said last Monday that his administration had surpassed the 35 per cent representation demand for women in elective and appointive positions in government.
Orji said at the inauguration of “Women for Change Initiative”, the pet project of the Wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan, in Umuahia.
He said that the state had a woman senator, two members of the House of Representatives and one member in the state House of Assembly.
The governor also said the State Head of Service was a woman and “we have two female commissioners, 13 judges and 11 women permanent secretaries.”
He said that at the local government level, his administration appointed four women as transition committee vice-chairpersons, while “the local government service commission is headed by a woman.”
“We have more than enough. What we need now is how to increase and sustain the pace of supporting women to seek elective positions,” he said.
The governor said that he was sponsoring a bill in Abia State House of Assembly to give legal backing to the idea but noted that “women must be educated to get it.
“The women should be educated and be discouraged from getting into early marriages to be able to get to the pinnacle of their careers,’’ he said.
While commending the first lady for initiating the project, the governor urged the women to register in the forthcoming registration of voters to achieve their dreams.
He also gave an assurance that Abia would support the project, noting: “We don’t have any alternative than to support the Jonathan/Sambo ticket.”
Earlier, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs Odochi Orji, said if women embraced politics, it would not stop them from playing their traditional roles in the family.
Mrs Chidinma Uwajimogu, the National Coordinator of the programme, said that the movement was grassroots-based to encourage women to participate, not only in politics but in every sphere of life.
Uwajimogu appealed to women to register as voters whenever the process would begin and be mobilised for the desire of the first lady to be achieved.
In an address, the Minister of Women Affairs, Chief Josephine Anenih, said that women were not actually asking for 35 per cent but demanding equality.
Anenih, while encouraging the women to register, said that she was looking forward to credible elections in the country, where the people’s vote would count.
The wives of the vice-president, Senate president, the governors of Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Kogi, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Ondo attended the ceremony.
The first lady is scheduled to end the two-day visit after inaugurating a skills acquisition centre and laying the foundation stone of Hanah-May Foundation , projects of the wife of the governor of Abia.
