Crime Prevention: Police Boss Seeks LG Assistance
Bayelsa State Commissioner for Police, Elder Udenka Onuoha, says the command has adopted security measures to fight growing crime waves in the state.
Elder Onuoha disclosed that such measures include policy driven community policing as well as consultative and strategic partnership with stakeholders at all levels of governance.
Onuoha, who was addressing chairmen from the eight constitutionally recognized local government areas of the state, said the new approach to crime prevention was in conformity with the blue-print on the policing strategy in the three-point agenda of the Inspector-Geneal of Police.
“Bayelsa State is riverine, the third wetland in the world, and the terrain very challenging for the business of law enforcement and policing”.
“The Police Marine Department in the command has been making the best use of the logistics at its disposal with little or no impact on sea piracy in the state”.
“The unavailability of serviceable speed engine boats to checkmate the menace of growing spate of piracy in the state has caused great anxiety and concern to Bayelsans and other stakeholders”, he said.
The police boss said in the past, chieftains of local government councils under the auspices of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) boosted the efforts of police by providing the force with Toyoto pravda Jeep for crime prevention patrols.
He said he has no doubt that the present local government leadership will also do the same thing.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, Chief Timipa Tiwei Orumie thanked the command for their efforts in ensuring that they rid the state of criminals.
Chief Orumie assured that the council chairmen would assist the police to achieve positive results.
Five out of the eight local government chairmen in the state attended the meeting.
