Unionist Tasks Labour Leaders On Co-operation
The National Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Apostle Tumini Diri has underscored the need for labour leaders and their members to cooperate and speak in one voice for the advancement of their cause, especially the improvement of workers’ welfare.
Apostle Diri gave the advice during an interview with The Tide at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
He noted that labour in Nigeria today is advancing and no longer encourages divisive tendencies because as he puts it, a house that is divided against itself cannot stand.
Apostle Diri who returned from Canada where he attended a labour conference pointing out that the federal government under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan is poised to put smiles on the faces of Nigerian workers by considering a living wage for them.
The NULGE National Vice President stated that there is no controversy over the leadership of the union in Rivers State noting that the only recongised executive council is that led by Barrister Franklin Ajinwo which was duly elected late last year.
He pointed out that the union cannot afford to be factionalised as those supporting a care-taker committee were doing so for selfish reasons, describing such care-taker committee as illegal.
Calling on the splinter group to come together and work as brothers and sisters with the present executive council, Diri stressed that there is no rancour in the state chapter which relates well within the state.
He advised any aggrieved party to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters for settlement, saying that members pay their check-off dues to the union accordingly.
