Shell Embarks On Community Development Projects In Bayelsa
The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has embarked on several development projects in its host communities at the Gbarain/Ubie Gas Gathering Plant Project in Bayelsa.The Project Manager of the multi-billion naira gas plant project, Mr Okechukwu Elechi, said that the projects were in the areas of education, electricity, water, health, and infrastructure, amongst others.Elechi said that SPDC had completed two units of six classroom blocks, upgraded 12 secondary schools’ laboratories, constructed one block of teachers’ quarters to accommodate 20 teachers.He also said that Shell had awarded 80 university scholarships and 40 secondary school scholarships to students from the host communities.On electricity, the project manager said that Shell in partnership with the Bayelsa State Electricity Board had embarked on measures to ensure regular power supply to the host communities.He said that electricity generation and distribution projects in nine communities had been completed and that four of them had been energised.Elechi said that back-up electrification projects for two other host communities were under construction.He said that designs for electrification projects for 14 communities in the area had been completed.In the area of provision of potable water, Elechi said 41 neighbourhood water schemes had been completed and handed over while designs for integrated water schemes for nine Gbarain communities were in progress.He also said that Shell had completed five kilometres of internal community roads in some of the host communities, adding that another 30 kilometres of roads and two bridges had also been completed.Elechi said three civic centres, nine town halls, two guest houses and 12 apartments had been completed in the host communities.He further said that Shell initiated blood pressure monitoring for the project workforce, trained 12 traditional birth attendants, and conducted village health system training for 80 people.He said that two health centres were built by the oil company and HIV and AIDS campaigns were carried out in the communities, while de-worming exercises were conducted in schools in the host communities.
