Bayelsa, UNICEF Partner On Projects
Bayelsa Government and United Nations International Children’s Education Fund, UNICEF, have signed a Programme Implementation Agreement (PIA) in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The PIA which was signed Wednesday is expected to map out strategies for interventions that would positively affect the prospects of children for survival and development in the basic social sectors of health, nutirition and basic education in the state.
To this end, Bayelsa State Government and UNICEF have in the agreement outlined seven points of action to mitigate the challenges facing children in the state.
In his remark at at the occasion, the state governor, Chief Timipre Sylva said that the state is doing its best in the area of child development and assured that it would accelerate progress.
Sylva explained that the state is constantly improving in planning but explained that since the state Child’s Rights Bill is still pending before the House of Assembly, the national law which has a binding force on all states of the federation would be used in the project,
The governor pledged that the state government would support the child health week slated for next week and urged UNICEF to present their programmes and agenda to the state.
Earlier, UNICEF Field Office in Enugu, Pelucy Ntambirweki said that the progress of children in Nigeria has been encouraging, but Bayelsa has continues to be one of the states where we have a high hope of deep transformation in the situation of children’.
Ntambirweki, however, appealed that the Child Rights Bill should be passed into law to strengthen the legal framework that will safeguard the rights of children and their care givers.
She also called for the passage of the RUWASSA bill ‘to ensure stronger commitment to provision of water, sanitation and hygiene services to the rural population’
The UNICEF officer noted that leadership was a root factor of success in places where development initiatives have worked, pointing out that appropriation and release of funds for the implementation of programmes were a key to success.
