NUT Tasks FG On Minimum Wage
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged the Federal Government to expedite action on labour’s demand for a new minimum wage.
The Secretary of the Lagos Chapter of the NUT, Mr Jamiu Idris, made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos on Friday.
Idris said it was regrettable that successive governments had failed to address the issue of a living wage for public servants in spite of the harsh economic environment.
“It is surprising that for some couple of years now, the Federal Government has not addressed the issue of pay rise for the civil service.
“All what we keep hearing is that government is setting up one committee or the other to look into the issue without any thing concrete coming out of the exercise,” he said.
He said the major challenge in the civil service was that of motivation, adding that it was a key factor in enhancing productivity.
“An average civil servant’s take home pay rarely takes them home.
“ That is why the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its wisdom, established a committee a long time ago to work out the minimum wage that would cushion the effect of the present economic situation,” Idris said.
He, however, said labour was not losing hope that the Federal Government would implement the N52,000 minimum wage.
“We are an affiliate of the NLC and we will continue to support the struggle to actualise this demand.
“What I am saying in essence is that increment in salary is a way of motivating workers because when you do this, you get maximum result,” he added.
