RSG To Support Legionnaires’ Agric Project
The Rivers State Government says it will support the agricultural projects being proposed by the Nigerian legion in the state.
The State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru said this yesterday at the wreath laying ceremony marking the end of the 2010 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day celebrations in Port Harcourt.
Engr. Ikuru who stood in for Governor Chibuike Amaechi said it has become necessary for government to support the project because it is an area the legionnaires would massively be economically empowered.
According to the deputy governor, this year’s budget had adequately made provision for the entire state to be put back into agriculture and farming as 10, 000 hectares heterophyllous and oil palm farms would soon be developed, pointing out that efforts are geared at completing all on-going projects this year.
Expressing dissatisfaction at the low response of legionnaires to the micro-finance loan earmarked for them by government, he enjoined them to approach the micro-finance agency and embrace the scheme in their own interest.
The state government, Engr. Ikuru maintained, would continue to honour the fallen heroes, retired and serving officers who staked their lives for the rest of the people to have peace.
Earlier, the state chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Col. Philemon Chinda (rtd) had appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to join hands with the government to restore smiles on the faces of the dependants of the fallen heroes through employment, soft loans and award of scholarship to their children to enable them have a sense of belonging.
He further appealed to the state governor who is also the legion’s patron to approve a monthly stipend for the body for the upkeep of its secretariat, assist it to build a befitting secretariat in the state.
The legionnaires praised Governor Amaechi for his developmental strides, saying “with what we have seen physically, we are hopeful that you will use the same wisdom to attend to the plight of the ex-servicemen and the dependants of the fallen heroes”.
