EU Delegation Launches SUNEGAS Project In N’ Delta
Leader of Delegation of the European Union in Nigeria, Mr Ramon Granda Monday in Abuja formally launched EU Sustainable Utilization of Nigeria’s Gas and Renwable Energy Resources (SUNEGAS) project with N60 million in the Niger Delta Region.
The project launch, according to the EU leader, is the birth of an innovative project designed to put smiles on the faces of Niger Deltans and Nigerians in general. The project he said, will help in the reduction of poverty while also contributing towards Nigerians march in attaining its vision 2020.
He pointed out that the pilot initiative in the Niger Delta region would also help in resolving the energy crisis in the area, using energy resources in a sustainable manner.
He added that the project seeks to demonstrate that decentralised energy provision can be sustainable and commercially viable in the Niger Delta, providing social and economic empowerment for communities within the region.
Granda made the declaration during the SUNEGAS project organised by the EU, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and the Living Earth Foundation Nigeria (LENF). Grand said despite abundant hydrocarbon and renewable energy resources, Nigeria suffers a persistent energy crisis, adding that decades of exploiting oil and gas dependence on imported fuels, and poor maintenance of infrastructure, have made poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) difficult.
