First Lady Condemns Violence Against Women
Wife of Rivers State Governor Dame Judith Amaechi has lamented that despite the campaign for the elimination of violence against women, the inhuman practice is on the increase.
The governor’s wife stated this in a statement signed by her Media Assistant, Dike Bekwele in commemoration of the 2009 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The Governor’s wife recalled that though there have been conventions on the elimination of violence and abuse of women, various human rights, reports indicate that the campaign is far from achieving its objective.
According to her, “it is obvious that women still face all forms of violence despite the crusade to end it. Today women are subjected to all forms of ill-treatment capable of lowering their esteem. We must challenge this trend and say no to violence against women”.
The Governor’s wife stated that the vulnerability of the woman have endangered them to their environment, adding that women are casualty of all unpleasant situations.
“Recently, young women were alleged to have been abused during the ex-militants rampage at Uniport, while the wife of former lawmaker in the state like other women has been made to face early widowhood due to the murder of her husband”.
She added that the psychological effect of such incidents on women is quite pitiable.
Mrs Amaechi called for the strengthening of policies and convention on eliminating violence against women through proper legislation and punishment.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted November 25th every year as the International Day for the elimination of Violence Against Women following its third adoption of the resolution in 1999 .
The first awareness was observed in November 25, 2000.
