FG Approves 7 New Private Varsities
Federal Government of Nigeria has approved seven new private universities in the country. The Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili who announced this Thursday said the seven new private universities bring the private universities to a total number of 34 private universities in the country. According to her, the seven new universities are Oduduwa University in Osun State, Rahamah university in Rivers State, Geoffrey Okoye University of Enugu State, and Babalola University in Ekiti State. The other three universities are in Anambra and Edo States, and Federal Capital Territory Abuja respectively. The Information and Communication Minister said, the additional universities brings the total universities in Nigeria to 96 including government owned universities in the country. Earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Mrs Aiskata J. Dukku told newsmen that the approved private institutions have met the criteria by the Federal Government for assessment and approval. Mrs Dukku said the additional institutions would not only decongest over crowding of population of students in government institutions, but boost the academic standard in the country. It would be recalled that, the Federal Government issued notice to close down private institutions operation without due assessment and approval by the Ministry of Education in the country. It was also learnt that, government ordered for the closure of over fifteen higher institutions following their delay to comply to the Federal Government order. By this approval of seven new private universities, indications have shown that, the Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring that other private institutions, which are still lagging behind in meeting up government’s criteria for approval would remain un-recognised. Students seeking admission into higher institution should therefore be aware of the development and the Federal Government’s policy on private higher institutions in the country. Enoch Epelle
