ASUU Strike: Protests Rock UNIUYO, UNICAL
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Uyo (UNIUYO) chapter, staged a potest in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital.
The ASUU Chairman, Comrade Ashong Ashong, led members and students through Ikot Ekpene Road, Ikpa Road and other adjoining streets in the city.
According to Ashong, the refusal of the federal government to implement the earlier agreement reached with the union was killing the university system.
He said the ongoing strike had forced some of the best brains in the system to leave for greener pastures in foreign institutions.
Meanwhile, some of the students who took part in the demonstration called for the removal of the Minister of Education Dr Sam Egwu for what they described as Egwu’s insensitivity to the plight of lecturers and students.
Also, ASUU members from the University of Calabar yesterday staged a peaceful protest.
The placard carrying members marched through major streets in Calabar to the governor’s office where they delivered a letter for onward transmission to President Umaru Yar Adua.
