MOI Pledges Support For UNICEF
The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Information, Dr. Godwin Mpi, has assured consultants to the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) that the Ministry would partner with them in carrying out their activities in the State.
Dr. Mpi gave this assurance during an interactive session with some UNICEF Consultants when they paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently.
He reiterated the fact that Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is committed to the health of the people especially children, and informed them that their aim is in line with the welfare package of State.
The Permanent Secretary lauded the effort of UNICEF in ensuring that the welfare and education of children are vigorously pursued and that the Ministry was ready to support them.
Earlier, the leader of the team, Dr. Godwin Okon informed the Permanent Secretary that they were in the State to sensitise the people on health related issues especially the killer diseases of children including HIVI AIDS.
He noted that in the past, Rivers State rated low in health performance indices and expressed the hope that the present administration would change the scenario positively.
He stated that UNICEF is currently drawing up a two-year communication plan that will be used by Rivers State Government to stem the high rate of child mortality, adding that the plan is still in the infancy stage and would be presented to the Governor as soon as it is concluded.
Dr. Okon stated that the plan will involve four States, namely; Rivers, Akwa lbom, Benue and Imo.
He appealed to the Permanent Secretary, that UNICEF would want to integrate with the Ministry in order to participate in its public health activities especially as they relate to Children.
