Journalists’ Welfare: RSG, Police Co-operate
The Rivers State Ministry of Information and the State Police command are making plans to check police brutality against Journalists in the state.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information, Dr. Godwin Mpi, said this in an interview with newsmen last weekend, in Port Harcourt, shortly after being conferred with an award by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Central.
Dr Mpi said that his office has held fruitful discussions with the police commissioner on the issue, pointing out that efforts are being made by the two organisations to check the urgly trend.
He also said that the police commissioner has asked interested members of the press to register as members of the police officers mess.
Meanwhile, the permanent secretary has described the award bestowed on him by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Central as a big surprise as he has never identified with the club before.
In his words: “Going through the programme, it is clear that humanity is one big family and Rotary is an organisation that is in pursuit of human progress”. He also said that he is proud to be associated with them.
Meanwhile the new President of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Central, Rotarian Amadi Ejike, has promised to initiate policies to improve the lives of the less privileged in the society.
The programmes, according to him, include setting up of micro credit scheme for regular visitation to Charity Homes, while literary programmes will be organised to improve knowledge and reading habit.
