MAN, Others Partner In Building Power Plant
The manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has said that it will use gas distributed by Mobil and Gaslink to build smaller power plant.
This decision was to compensate for the earlier plan of a mega power plant that has been hindered by shortage of gas in the country which has been consistent.
President of the association, Basir Borodo stated that Staerling Bank Plc had agreed with members of the association to support the project, when he spoke to the press.
According to him “we are to use gas distributed by Gaslink and Mobil to build smaller power plants that will produce about 30 megawatts in each of the industrial clusters in Ikeja and Apapa, and one mega watt is expected to cost $1 million, which means 20M will cost $20 million.”
He said “we are looking at 30 megawatts of wind power for Kano” pointing out that the association had recently discarded plans to build a mega Independent Power Plant (IPP) which according to him failed because of frequent shortage of gas, and that from reports, gas will not be available for them to continue the project.
Borodo pointed out that even the government power plant commissioned are not functioning as a result of gas shortage.
MAN’s earlier plans to build own IPP was to make power available to boost production capacity for the manufacturing sector of the economy.
According to the Presidential Steering Council on The National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) at its meeting presided over by vice president Goodluck Jonathan recently, the different NIPP Project across the country have reached over 75 per cent completion.
It stated that insufficiency of dry gas and lack of adequate security for the gas pipeline, were constraints militating against the ability of government to generate the targeted 6,000 mw by the end of the year.
At the moment, the council also noted that the country had 4,500mw of power generation capacity, but lamented that it was only able to distribute about 2,500mw due to the insufficiency of dry gas to power the plants.
