Flood Wreaks Havoc In Eket
Hundreds of households in Eket, Akwa Ibom, lost property worth millions of naira to flood caused by a downpour last Friday.
Our correspondent reports that 20 families in Ikot Ebok and RCC areas of Eket were rendered homeless by the flood.
The victims, who were seen trying to salvage some of their property from collapsed buildings, said they were transferring their valuables to houses of relations.
Mr Ekerete Akpan, a resident at 20 Ikot Ebok Street, told that the flood was massive as it was caused by poor drainage channels in the area.
“The drainage system here is substandard that is why every rain here makes us to panic. We have complained to relevant authorities without any response and now that we are homeless, where do we go?” Akpan asked.
A visit by our reporter to Eket on Saturday showed that Grace Bill road, Afaha-uqua road, RCC Road, and parts of Eket-Oron road were the worst hit by the disaster.
Mr Emmanuel Udoh, chairman of Eket Local Government, attributed the flood to blockage of drainage channels with household waste by some residents.
“People are fond of dumping their household waste in the gutter during the rains and that is the main cause of the flooding that we are seeing,” he said.
