Stop Targeting Kukah, SERAP Tells FG
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has called on Nigerian authorities to stop targeting the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Archdiocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, over his Christmas message.
Kukah had accused President Muhammadu Buhari of nepotism like never experienced in the history of Nigeria.
Kukah, in his Christmas message titled, “A Nation in Search of Vindication” delivered in Sokoto State, last Friday, said Buhari had succeeded in sacrificing the dreams of Nigerians on the altar of nepotism by pursuing Northern hegemony.
The Bishops message had been drawing criticisms from the President’s friends, political associates and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), launched an attack on the Bishop.
MURIC accused Kukah of being a first-class blackmailer.
Reacting, SERAP in a Tweet via its Twitter handle, yesterday, insisted that freedom of expression is a fundamental right, adding that Kukah shouldn’t be a target for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
“Nigerian authorities should stop targeting Bishop Matthew Kukah simply for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression,” SERAP tweeted.
“Freedom of expression is a fundamental right.
“We’ll continue to fight to defend the right of everyone to freedom of expression. @UNHumanRights.”
