MAN Seeks Industrial Park In Rivers
The President of the Rivers and Bayelsa States’ chapter of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Alabo Adawari Pepple, has called for the establishment of an industrial park in Rivers State.
Speaking in a phone-in programme at the weekend organised by the Silverbird Communications in Port Harcourt, last Saturday, Pepple opined that the park would stimulate industrial growth and boost revenue for the state.
The MAN president said, “It’s the responsibility of government to provide an area which can run on PPP basis for power and other basic amenities. If this is done, you have reduced the problem of tax leakages and touts.”
He suggested that such park should be established in the Greater Port Harcourt area where there was enough land and space.
As far as he was concerned, the Free Trade Zone was not sufficient to drive economic boom in the state, as many small and medium scale industries cannot meet up their requirements.
The former Senate chief whip, maintained that an industrial park can house small SMEs which can latch on the economies of scale provided by the bigger companies to thrive.
Besides, he argued that the cost of doing business would also be reduced if businesses were clustered in the park.
So far, he explained that the cost of doing business now was huge due to poor electricity supply across the state.
He, however, commended the Rivers State Government for harmonising taxes, arguing that it would boost economic growth and development.
“The tax policy of the state government is normal. We, in MAN, believe that taxation should not be so hot on the front burner”, he added.
Pepple emphasised that a good tax policy was an incentive for industries to grow, as he advocated for more tax holidays and rebates for manufacturers and producers.
