Dickson Urges Police To Probe Killing …At APC Rally As APC Protests, Demands Police Protection
Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, has called on the police to investigate the violence that marred last Saturday’s campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign at Tungbabiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state, which led to the death of one person with 17 others injured.
Dickson in a statement last Monday in Yenagoa by Director of Strategic Communication, Government House, Nathan Egba-Ologo, particularly urged the police to “bring all the culprits involved in the violence that led to the killing of a citizen in the area to book.”
He said his administration had always emphasised the need to have violence-free campaigns for elections in Bayelsa, and would not tolerate any act that could threaten the peace in the state.
Dickson urged the police to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those behind the death of the victim as well as the thugs who burnt houses and destroyed property in the community.
He advised the leadership of opposition parties in the state not to capitalise on the unfortunate incident to foment crisis in the state.
He stressed that a planned protest rally by some opposition elements in the state was unnecessary, adding that the security agencies should be allowed to do their jobs without any interference from any quarters.
The governor said, “I wish to make it clear once again that this government has zero tolerance for political violence. I condemn all forms of political violence irrespective of political parties. As a government, we have made it clear that we are committed to peaceful election in the state.
“I call on the police authorities and all the relevant security agencies to investigate and bring all the perpetrators of this needless violence to book.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State last Monday staged a protest over alleged killing of its members ahead the general elections.
Former governor and leader of APC in Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva and Minister of State for Agriculture, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri led the protest to the police command headquarters in Yenagoa.
Sylva, while addressing thousands of party followers, who marched from the party secretariat to the police headquarters, described the killing of an APC member at a rally in Sagbama as unacceptable.
