Agency Rates Wike High On Water, Sanitation
The Rivers State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has rated Governor Nyesom Wike high in the provision of water and sanitation facilities in the rural areas.
Acting General Manager of the agency, Mr Napoleon Adah, who said this while declaring open a two-day Open Defecation Free (ODF) workshop in Opobo Town, headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area said that the effort of the Governor has helped to reduce the rate of waterborne diseases in most rural communities in the state.
Adah further said that with the kind approval by the Governor for another N220 million for more water projects in two additional local government areas under the Niger Delta Support Programme (NDSP), more communities in the state will have potable drinking water in their domains.
He said that his agency will continue to enlighten communities in the State against indiscriminate dumping of faeces and their human waste, stressing that the intention of the agency is to ensure that all communities in the state are open defecation free.
Meanwhile, an official of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs Koybara Ayaba has called for private sector investments in the provision of toilet and sanitation facilities in the state.
Mrs Ayaba, who was the lead facilitator at the seminar said that investments by the private sector in the building of toilet facilities will improve hygiene as well as lead to the creation of job opportunities.
She however said that achieving Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in the state will depend on behavioural change, stressing that Rivers State can attain the status of Open Defecation Free (ODF) if there is a serious commitment by both the authorities and people to adopt best practices in faeces disposal through the provision of modern toilet system in all households.
She urged the State Task Group on Sanitation (STGs) to ensure the creation of awareness around communities in the state on the importance of sanitation.
