Motorists Bemoan Deplorable State Of PH/Aba Expressway
Several Failed portions of the PH/Aba Expressway have sparked off protest among motorists including commuters who chanted war songs to press home their anger against Federal government alleged non- challant attitude.
Going by the pressure of hear vehicular movement, poor maintenance of the bridges, fear of road failure induced automobile accidents, have become regular features for motorists, and people plying the ever-busy expressway.
But the protesters, in the early hours, of Thursday armed with placards: “Buhari, FERMA Repair our Roads,” The Failed Portion Cause Deaths,” “We Need FERMA’S Attention, or” No motorists will ply the road,” among others lasted for hours before they retired to their respective homes.
Leader of the protesting motorists around obehie- Asa in Abia State, Nze Chukwudi Ikenna said: “We, as motorists, take the risk every day we drive on top of the failed portions in fear. Several persons have been killed due to the failed portions. What is FERMA doing to the federal roads’. We will continue to protest until government repairs the road’.
The motorists alleged that, in spite of the hue and cry which greeted the series of bloody accidents recorded on the road, their calls on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA ) to repair the deadly potholes, besides the fast- developing gully erosion sites, reportedly responsible for various road mishaps, FERMA has allegedly ignored their pleads.
As the situation of the road becomes more deplorable especially near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation mega filling station close to Eleme Junction, the people need urgent attention Rivers people have called on FERMA to employ proactive measures to avert further loss of lives and property along the road.
Worried by the non- response by the Agency to the danger on the road, tongues have started wagging, alleging insensitivity.
They, however, pleaded with the Rivers and Abia States Governments to come to their aid, by employing temporary measures, such as filling the various gully erosion sites currently barricaded with drum and stones to caution on coming vehicles.

Senate Orders NAFDAC To Ban Sachet Alcohol Production by December 2025 ………Lawmakers Warn of Health Crisis, Youth Addiction And Social Disorder From Cheap Liquor
The upper chamber’s resolution followed an exhaustive debate on a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), during its sitting, last Thursday.
He warned that another extension would amount to a betrayal of public trust and a violation of Nigeria’s commitment to global health standards.
Ekpenyong said, “The harmful practice of putting alcohol in sachets makes it as easy to consume as sweets, even for children.
“It promotes addiction, impairs cognitive and psychomotor development and contributes to domestic violence, road accidents and other social vices.”
Senator Anthony Ani (Ebonyi South) said sachet-packaged alcohol had become a menace in communities and schools.
“These drinks are cheap, potent and easily accessible to minors. Every day we delay this ban, we endanger our children and destroy more futures,” he said.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, ruled in favour of the motion after what he described as a “sober and urgent debate”.
Akpabio said “Any motion that concerns saving lives is urgent. If we don’t stop this extension, more Nigerians, especially the youth, will continue to be harmed. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has spoken: by December 2025, sachet alcohol must become history.”
According to him, “This is not just about alcohol regulation. It is about safeguarding the mental and physical health of our people, protecting our children, and preserving the future of this nation.
“We cannot allow sachet alcohol to keep destroying lives under the guise of business.”
