Aluu 4: Ex-Police Sergeant, Two Others Bag Death Sentence
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, presided over by Justice Letan L. Nyordee, last Monday, sentenced to death, without any option, an ex-police Sergeant, Lucky Orji and two others for their roles and complicity in the murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt.
The four students of UNIPORT, Ugonna Obuzor, Toku Lloyd, Tekena Elkannah and Chiadika Biringa were murdered in a mob action at Umuokiri, Aluu community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on 5th October, 2012.
The two others sentenced to death alongside the ex-police sergeant include, Mr. Ikechukwu Louis Amadi and David Chinasa (Alias Kapoon).
The court also discharged and acquitted four other accused persons, charged alongside the convicts, for lack of prosecution.
Those acquitted by the court are Joshua Ekpe, Abiodun Yusuf, Abang Cyril and John Ayubu.
The trial judge while sentencing the three convicts to death, opined that nobody has the right to take the life of another, adding that their action during the mob attack on the four deceased students, was unlawful and unjustified.
He affirmed that the convicts’ confessional statements corroborated the evidence in video clips as tendered by the prosecution during the trial, which according to him, showed their level of participation in the killing of the four victims.
The judge ruled that the evidence brought against the convicts was overwhelming and glaring.
Letan explained that ex-Sergeant Lucky Orji admitted that he did heat one of the victims on his head with his gun butt because he thought they were criminals, while Amadi and Chinasa also admitted their involvement during the mob attack.
“The evidence before the court against the convicts is overwhelming and glaring. During the cross-examination and pre-trial
