FIDA Wants Family Court In Rivers
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State, has called for the establishment of a family court in the state.
The federation through its chairperson, Mrs Anthonia Osademe said this at a press briefing as part of activities marking its 30 years of existence in the state.
She said that a family court would promote stability across families in the state and called for an intervention centre where victims of violence could temporarily be rehabilitated and counseled while their mothers receive adequate attention.
“We note with great concern the need for an intervention centre (Safe Home) where victims of violence can temporarily be rehabilitated, counseled while their matters receive adequate attention”.
She urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to adopt into law the violence against persons prohibition bill with a view to ensuring speedy dispensation of justice and offer recompense for victims.
She said that, within the last 30 years, FIDA has distinguished its works by applying multi-faceted approach to issues concerning women and children.
Mrs Osademe listed some of these approaches to include evidence based advocacy, capacity building, sensitization, roundtable discussion, advocacy visits, publications, media campaigns, among others.
She said that free legal services, which include, legal representations in court, humanitarian services, career building mentoring and women empowerment through establishment of small scale businesses have been carried out.
