Stamp Duty: NIPOST Seeks Monarch’s Support
The Nigerian Postal
Services (NIPOST) has called on traditional rulers in the country to encourage their people to adopt the Federal Government’s policy on stamp duty.
The Area Postal Manager (APM) of Rivers Territory, NIPOST, Rev. Yinka Danso, made the call recently during a courtesy call on the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, the Amanyanabo of Opobo in his office in Port Harcourt.
According to her, non-compliance with the act by “people of the state’ has constituted a major challenge to NIPOST.
We wish to bring to the attention of your Royal Majesty that the Nigerian Postal Service, Rivers Territory, is experiencing some challenges with the people of the State on the need for them to comply with existing law of the Federation of Nigeria CAP 58 on Stamp Duties Act Protocol, Vol 14,2004”, she said.
She explained that “the Stamp Duty Act is an Act of government requiring citizen’s to affix postage stamp to every document/receipt, etc that may require authentication.
“All hotels, educational institutions, financial houses, rent collectors, agencies, etc are by the law compelled to affix postages stamp to denote payment of duty”, she said.
Danso further explained that the Stamp Duty Act makes it compulsory for business transactions above N1,000.00 to have their receipts/documents affixed with N50.00 postage tamp to ensure compliance with the Stamp Duties Act, thereby authenticating it.
Among the numerous benefits of the Stamp Duty Act, the NIPOST boss said it provides necessary Proof of ownership.
“Stamping protocol confers legality on instruments (agreements, bills of exchange, seals, contract notes, conveyances, leases, receipts, etc)
“It can be tendered in any court of law, it clears the way for proof of ownership, it gives weight to documents, confers priority and genuineness on such document”, she concluded.
While thanking the Area Postal Manager for the visit and enlightenment on the services offered by NIPOST, HRM Dandison D. Jaja stated the need to safeguard Government properties in the state.
He assured that as a traditional Ruler, he would do the needful to not only pass on the messages, but also see to its execution as much as possible.
