Uproot Trees Under High Tension Wires, Soberekon Tells RSG
An elder statesman in
Rivers State, Rev Sokari Soberekon, has commended the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for the ongoing dualisation of Trans-Amadi Road.
Rev Soberekon, who said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, however urged for the proper monitoring of the project to ensure that the contractor adheres to the standard.
According to the elder statesman, Governor Wike must not allow the contractor dualising the road to rob Rivers people by using poor quality material, for the road or used three inches instead of six inches of asphalt after the compressed chippings.
It also said that the contractor must be made to raise the height of the road to six inches as the first Military Administrator of old Rivers State, Alfred Diete-Spiff did, which made the road to last for longer period.
“Wike please don’t allow the road contractor rob us. Dualisation is good but they should use six inches of asphalt, not three inches.
“Nobody should tell Wike half truth. If you don’t use six inches, it will spoil quick and you get back to repair, that way you spend more money,” Dr Soberekon said.
He also commended Nyesom Wike for removing tyres which were earlier used to fence the Port Harcourt flyover, stressing that it shows that Wike is a listening governor.
“We don’t need tyres to fence there because, it is dangerous. If it catches fire, the entire Port Harcourt city will burn down.
“The governor should also uproot those tyres under high tension wire planted by his predecessor to avoid a repeat of the Trans-Amadi slaughter incident where some trees under high tension wire conducted current and killed over 50 people.”
Dr Soberekon also pledged to work with the Urban Development Ministry and sanitation authority to uproot the trees without payment as a demonstration of his patriotism in the state.
