RBDA’s Resources: FG, Songhai Farms Sign MoU
The Federal Govern
ment on Friday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Songhai Farms, Porto-Novo, Benin Republic, to harness resources of River Basin Development Authorities in the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, said the agreement would also help in boosting employment opportunities for the youths.
Adamu said the MoU, which revolves around the graduate employment scheme, would be located in each of the 109 Senatorial Districts across the country.
According to him, the scheme would enhance the ability of the river basins to package their water services with the provision of complimentary basic rural infrastructure and improved agricultural support services.
“These centres would be along the Songhai Farm settlement style, exploring Public-Private Partnership model ownership and financing while the river basins would be the primary delivery vehicles.
“The main objective of this scheme is massive job creation for the youth with all-year round agricultural production and other value chain activities such as processing, storage and markets.
“Each of these farm centres will have a minimum of 50 graduates amounting to about 1,200 graduate employees nationwide,” the minister said.
Adamu urged the Chief Executive Officers of the River Basins to take charge of implementation of the scheme for increased food production, graduate employment and effective management of the water resources.
The Regional Director, Songhai Farms Ltd., Prof. Godfrey Nzamujo, described the model as an opportunity for Nigeria to use its God-given resources to fight poverty.
Nzamujo said there was the need for Nigeria to begin to invest in agriculture, saying this would boost wealth creation, human capital development and improvement in health.
He noted that food produced in an unhealthy way had negative effects on the lives of those who consumed them.
The Chairman, Forum of Managing Directors of River Basin Authorities, Mr Jimoh Afolayan, commended the minister for initiating the blueprint toward repositioning river basins across the country.
Afolayan restated the commitment of the forum in seeing that Songhai model was well implemented for sustainable development in the country.

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
