Government has been called upon to expedite action on the proposed traffic lights of strategic junctions in the state.
A transporter, Chief Okechukwu Julius made the call in a chat with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
Julius said the re-introduction of traffic lights would in no small measure help reduce accident and traffic gridlock.
Describing the installation of the traffic lights as a welcome development, he noted that government should ensure regular maintainance, and of the facility and commuters to obey the traffic rules and regulations at all times.
According to him, to make it more effective, government should ensure that there is a taskforce to enforce compliance by motorists, adding that most motorists do not obey traffic rules and regulations.
Juluis who is also the Managing Director of J & P motors further noted that the installation of traffic lights would further boost the present administration of Governor Nyesom Wike who is embarking on massive road construction and rehabilitation in the state, adding that the motoring public and other road users are highly impressed by his developmental strides.
He also used the opportunity to appeal to the government and other relevant organs to reconstruct the dilapidated bus-stop stands within and outside Port Harcourt, in order to also help reduce hold-ups and the on going extortion of money by some hoodlums who disguise themselves as government task forces.
The stakeholder said these hoodlums should be made to keep clear as some of them openly extort money from drivers that carefully and lawfully parked at the designed bus-stop, stressing that the authorites should brace-up and stop this urgly trend once and for all.
