AAG: Nigeria Renews Rivalry With Ghana
Nigeria will renew
their perennial rivalry with Ghana in the men’s event of the 2015 All African Games after they were drawn in the same first round group yesterday.
The tournament reserved for U23s will be staged in Congo Brazzaville in September.
Ghana are the defending champions and were seeded in a tough-looking Group B along with arch-rivals Nigeria, Senegal and Egypt.
For Samson Siasia’s Dream Team VI this will be an ideal dress rehearsal should they qualify for the CAF U23 Championship in Senegal, which will serve as a qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
They will battle Congo over two legs for a place at the U23 Championship in Senegal.
Group A is relatively lightweight as it has hosts Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso.
The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-finals of the competition, which runs from September 4 to 19.
In the women’s event, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are drawn with the host country in Group A, Tanzania and Coted’Ivoire, who finished third at last year’s African Women’s Championships.
Group B has Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana and Egypt.
