Customs Suspends 23 Officers Over Various Offences
No fewer than 23 senior
officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has been suspended for alleged extortion and other illegal offences committed during official duties between January and March, 2015.
The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Wale Adeniyi who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja over the weekend said among those on suspension were a Deputy Comptroller of Customs serving in Apapa Port, two Assistant Superintendents serving in Seme Command, while three other Assistant Superintendents of Customs (ASC) had earlier been suspended for alleged extortion of US$13,000 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Adeniyi hinted that 12 of the officers were suspended from service pending the outcome of investigations while 11 others are currently facing panels set up by the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde.
According to him, the three officers allegedly extorted the money from an importer during the outward clearance of the passengers on Emirates Airline Flight from overseas.
He said nine of the officers were suspended from the service pending the outcome of the investigative panel, while five out of the 11 officers had appeared before the panel for negligence and improper examination of containers, as six others also appeared before the same panel for offences ranging from falsification of academic certificates, indiscipline, hacking of passwords, negligence of duties, among others.
The Customs image maker further said five Assistant Comptrollers serving in Tin Can Island Port were among those suspended for improper release of seized goods, while two other Assistant Superintendents of Customs serving in Seme Command were affected by the action for alleged rape which they committed in Badagry area of Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Comptroller General of Customs, Dikko Inde had earlier warned that the service would not tolerate such offences as the machinery for investigations would be strengthened to deal and punish any erring officers of the service.
