Ministry Assures FG On Automotive Policy Implementation
The Director of
Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals Department of the Ministry of Mines and Steel, Mr Abdullahi Also, has assured that the Ministry would contribute its quota towards the success of the Federal Government’s new automotive policy.
Also who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja last Friday said the Ministry was conscious of the role of steel in the automobile industry, pointing out that they were determined to ensure that the existing rolling mills contribute their quota towards the automotive policy inspite of the challenges facing the plants.
According to him, the new policy imposses higher tariff on imported vehicles, aims at encouraging the local manufacturing of vehicles in the country.
He hinted, “implementation of the automotive policy is a gradual process and the policy had just started. They are all trying to strategise. You know a car consists of so many components,” adding that “presently we do not have functioning integrated plant in Nigeria, but we have steel companies at the downstream and the value chain in the steel process.
The Director noted that the government is serious and committed to the automotive policy and that the private sector is also committed at it, in order to key into the system.
He reiterated that the Federal Government’s metallurgical bill before the National Assembly had progressed well and there is hope that it would be passed into law soon for the interest of the country.
