Mariner Urges Training Of Young Maritime Professionals
The President, Nigerian
Association of Master Mariners (NAMM) Capt. Saib Olopoenia has urged operators in the maritime industry to train young professionals for continuity.
Olopoenia who made the plea in an interview with our Correspondent in Lagos on Monday, said that continuity should not be limited to seafarers only but should involve every aspect of the maritime industry.
“The issue of training of mariners is just one aspect of so many other things that are happening in the industry.
“All stakeholders should be concerned with how to get more maritime professionals and not only master mariners.
“Even maritime journalists should be trained to know what is happening in the maritime sector,’’ the mariner said.
According to the NAMM president, the association has continued to advise the government on what could be done to train up in-coming seafarers who can replace the aging ones.
He said the association was always ready to discuss with all stakeholders on how best to sustain the need for training of young persons for succession of mariners.
“We are trying our best; we will continue to talk to government and hope that they listen to our views.
“We are also ready to discuss with stakeholders at any forum to proffer solutions to our problems in the maritime industry,’’ Olopoenia said.
The mariner said the association tried to educate stakeholders in the industry about their roles in the industry on land and on the sea.
