1.6 Bn Tonnes Of Carbon Dioxide Emitted Yearly – Don
A University lecturer and
Assistant Director, Centre for Ethnic and Conflict studies (CENTEC’s) University of Port Harcourt, Dr Fidelis Allen has put the yearly emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere of 1.6 billion tonnes.
Speaking on the topic: the Role of Clean Development mechanism in Climate change mitigations at a seminar in Port Harcourt, Dr Allen that within the last one year, carbon dioxide emission has continued to increase.
He said that, his situation has caused collased domages to the ozone layer, thereby resulting to serious environmental problems for inhabitants of the earth.
The University Don, however said that impacts are more on the developing countries especially those of Africa stressing that presently over 300 million people across the world are suffering the servere impacts of climate change.
Dr Allen who listed some of the effects of climate change as ecological disorder and the poor health condition of the people said that the issue requires the collective effort of all countries of the world.
He observed that though, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) concept was developed to help poor countries overcome the challenges of climate change, the concept has done little to improve the condition of the developing countries.
Dr Allen however took a swipe at the developed countries for continous pollution of the environment stressing that the developed countries must pay to Africa for all the damages caused to the continent.
On his own part, Mr Michael Karikpo of Environment Right Action (ERA) friends of the earth, decribed the concept of the CDM as a big deceit formulated by imperialist powers to further worsen the environmental problem of Africa.
Mr Karikpo who spoke on the corbon market and the future of the environment, said that the concept has turned Africa into a dumping ground for the imperialist masters .
He said that the sooner Africa countries realize this, the better for the continent.
