Eleme Youth Threaten Blockage Of Oil, Gas Free Zone Route
Youth of Eleme in Eleme
Local Government Area of Rivers State have threatened to block the route leading to the multi-billion naira Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone if the Federal Government does not take immediate action towards rehabilitating the road which is in total disrepair.
The youth said, apart from the oil and Gas Free Zone route, they would also block the route leading to the NNPC Port Harcourt to ensure that nobody passes until the routes are dualised.
Eleme Youth Chairman, Mr Wokoma Saka who made this known to newsmen in Port Harcourt at the weekend expressed disappointment that action to block the routes has become the last resort because all efforts made to get relevant agencies of the government to put the routes in good shape have continued to fail to attract desired attention.
Saka said the poor and dangerous state of the roads have resulted in many deaths as trailers conveying goods have severally fallen resulting in several serious vehicular accidents.
He said, “our youths are on their way to block the routes to ensure nobody passes until the road is dualised.”
It would be recalled that Tanker Drivers Chapter of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) recently threatened shut down operation because of the poor state of the routes.
NUPENG said it is regrettable the roads which death trap in recent times have jeopardise economic activities in the area.
Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone which is managed by Ocean Management Solution (DMS) Nigeria Limited is the single largest and fastest growing free zone in the world dedicated solely to the oil and gas industry.
The zone hosts hundreds of companies which are major players in the strategic oil and gas sector in the country.
The Tide gathered that the planned blockage of the route by aggrieved Eleme youth if not resolved might disrupt the 2014 Nigeria Oil and Gas Trade and Investment Forum slated to hold in the zone this month.
The forum participants from national and international oil and gas companies, relevant MDAs, stakeholders and foreign investors from Middle East, Asia, USA, Europe and other parts of the African continent.
