60 Benefit From Shell’s Special Scholarship

velopment Company of Nigeria (SPDC) has inaugurated the 5th batch of its Special Scholarship for secondary school students tagged Cradle-To-Career Programme.
Sixty students from Niger Delta region were beneficiaries from the scheme which was inaugurated Friday at Brook Stone Secondary School, Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Shell Country Chair and Managing Director, Mutiu Sunmonu said the 60 beneficiaries were talented and gifted people who probably would not have had the opportunity to access the kind of quality secondary education as would be provided by the scheme.
The Shell MD stated in his address at the ceremony that, “the beneficiaries were chosen through a rigorous selection process and highly competitive examination conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State”.
“After successfully completing the orientation programme, the pupils are placed in three top private boarding schools in Port Harcourt: Brookstone Secondary School, Jephthah Comprehensive College and Archdeacon Brown Education Centre”, Sunmonu explained.
The SPDC boss who was represented at the event by the Asset Manager East of the company, Mr Boma Brown, noted that the Cradle-To-Career Programe was designed to bridge educational inequalities resulting from geographical and socio-economic differences, promote access to quality education as well as enhance high literacy levels in the Niger Delta region.
Describing education as the bed rock of any nation’s growth and development, the managing director said the challenge lies in developing and impler menting strategies to make educational opportunities accessible and affordable to every one irrespective of social status or background.
Rivers State Commissioners for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi commended SPDC for giving opportunity to children of the state through the programme.
The commissioner who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs Stella Wigwe noted that Rivers State gives priority to education and urged other organisations and corporate bodies to emulate Shell.
Highlight of the event was the handover of suitcases to each of the lucky students.

Power Supply Boost: FG Begins Payment Of N185bn Gas Debt
In the bid to revitalise the gas industry and stabilise power generation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorised the settlement of N185 billion in long-standing debts owed to natural gas producers.
The payment, to be executed through a royalty-offset arrangement, is expected to restore confidence among domestic and international gas suppliers who have long expressed concern about persistent indebtedness in the sector.
According to him, settling the debts is crucial to rebuilding trust between the government and gas producers, many of whom have withheld or slowed new investments due to uncertainty over payments.
Ekpo explained that improved financial stability would help revive upstream activity by accelerating exploration and production, ultimately boosting Nigeria’s gas output adding that Increased gas supply would also boost power generation and ease the long-standing electricity shortages that continue to hinder businesses across the country.
The minister noted that these gains were expected to stimulate broader economic growth, as reliable energy underpins industrialisation, job creation and competitiveness.
In his intervention, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Secretariat, Ed Ubong, said the approved plan to clear gas-to-power debts sends a powerful signal of commitment from the President to address structural weaknesses across the value chain.
“This decision underlines the federal government’s determination to clear legacy liabilities and give gas producers the confidence that supplies to power generation will be honoured. It could unlock stalled projects, revive investor interest and rebuild momentum behind Nigeria’s transition to a gas-driven economy,” Ubong said.
