Resist Desperate Politicians, Rivers Deputy Speaker Tells Youths
The Deputy Speaker of
the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee, has urged the youths of Nyokhana-Ogoni in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, to resist desperate politicians who would want to recruit them as thugs for their selfish ambition.
In a goodwill message he presented during the inauguration of the Nyokhana Youth Council, at the palace of the Menebua Baa at Taabaa town in Khana Local Government Area, last Saturday, the Deputy Speaker said that it has become imperative for the youth to be wary of desperate politicians ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Alleging that the opposition party in the state was desperate to win power at all cost without considering the interest of the state and its people, Hon. Kwanee warned against returning the state to the previous military and cultism era where law and order were completely broken down and human life was of no value.
He urged the youths to support Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s vision to build a better Rivers State.
He regretted that many youths have become willing pawns in the hands of desperate politicians and urged parents to properly bring up their children with the fear of God.
“It is disturbing to know that many cases of election violence are perpetrated by youths. Youths are expected to play a role in our democracy. They are expected to ensure that elections are not rigged and ballot boxes and votes are protected”, he said.
He charged the leadership of the new youth body to be accountable, just and transparent, as well as abhor high handedness in the running of the affairs of the council.
He also urged them to assist in sensitising youths on eradication of cultism and the need for peace in the community.
Earlier in his remarks, the Gbenemene Nyokhana, King WZP Nzidee, represented by the Mene Bua Baa, Mene S. Nule, noted that due to the absence of a youth body for the past two years, cultism and insecurity had been on the rise in the area and urged the new youth body to work with the chiefs and government to eradicate these vices and ensure a peaceful atmosphere for development to thrive.
In his acceptance speech, the new President, Comrade Barikpoa Serekara, promised to work hand-in hand with the security agencies to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for development in Nyokhana community.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
