Investors Scramble For Rivers Delta Rubber Firm

The Rivers State Government says, a number of private investors, including Siat Nigeria Limited, have indicated interest to buy the state-Owned Delta Rubber Company, Okomoko, Etche Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chindah disclosed this when he led directors and other officials of the Ministry to the Ubima and Elele nucleus of Risonpalm Limited.
Chindah said that the success of Risonpalm will be replicated in both the rubber, fishery and other sectors of the state’s agricultural programme.
He said that Risonpalm, which is being run by the Siat of Belgium has the largest palm oil mill in West Africa, stressing that the company, which has about 16,000 hectares of Oil Palm has created employment opportunities for thousands of unemployed youths of Rivers State.
Meanwhile, the State government has concluded arrangements to launch an eutgrowers oil palm production programme in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Emmanuel Chindah said that the programme is part of the government’s effort to create a market for local oil palm producers.
He said that, with the resuscitation of Risonpalm, local oil palm producers can now find a market for their products, stressing that the visit was to show to the directors and others what the government is doing in the agricultural sector of the state.
According to him, the government is taking its palm oil project to another phase that will make local farmers an integral part of the agriculture transformation programme.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture, Barrister Otonye Okoye, said that the essence of  the excursion is to ginger the people to key into the various agricultural programmes of the government.
According to her, the era of hoes and matchetes in agriculture is gone, noting that the sector is now modernized.
Earlier, the Chief Operation Manager, Siat Nigeria Limited, Mr. Henk 2 Wincterman said that the major target of the company is to produce 100,000 tons of rubber per year.
He also said that the company is now ready to buy from interested outgromers farmers in the state.
