Keke Operators Vandalise frsc Office In Yenagoa
Hundreds of Keke NAEP
stormed the state command headquarters of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Yenagoa recently protesting what they called over bearing and extortion of money by members of the corps.
During the fracas, doors and windows of different offices belonging to the corps were destroyed but quick intervention of the police and the Civil Defences, the main building of the command from further damage.
The kekoperators had also alleged that one of their members had and accident in which two primary school kids were killed.
According to them, the said member was being pursued by FRSC operatives when he lost control and hit the children who were at that time returning from school.
The victims, a two year old girl and a four year old boy, both from the same parents were said to be coming back from school on that fateful day in company of their elder cousin, aged 14, who is still receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa when a Keke driver allegedly being pursued by the FRSC patrol ran into them.
The Bayelsa State Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Vincent Jack said he has set up a panel to investigate the matter and expressed regret over the incidence.
The FRSC boss appealed to all road users to be calm and allow the investigation take place, and report back, pointing out that if any person was found culpable, including the men of the corps, he would be penalised.
Explaining further, he noted that the FRSC is an organisation that is internationally recognised, wondering why his men would go out on patrol to pursue motorists.
“There is no reason for what soever for any of our patrol teams to leave its duty post and go and start pursuing any crring vehicles. It is on record that the Keke NAPEP constitute the bulk of road users in Yenagoa in terms of transportation. It is also on record that we called for the use of kek NAPEP. We engaged Govt to approve this Keke and sent a bill to the House of Assembly and banned the use of Okada in the state. We see that Keke is more safe for the users. Before they were engaged, we had interface with the union to make sure that they will not constitute what the Okada riders use to do”.
Also speaking, the Bayelsa State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Erebor ThankGod expressed regret over the unfortunate incidence.
