Gridlock In PH Following ‘Chibok Girls’ Protest
There was gridlock at the ever-busy Azikiwe Road in the heart of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, as a Coalition of Civil Societies joined their counterparts across the country to protest the continuous abduction of over 200 female students of Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents.
The protesters, who started their march from the Isaac Boro Park, also carried placards with various inscriptions, which, include; “Bring Back Our Girls”, “she deserves to be at home, not in Sambisa forest”, “Destroy the beast of Boko Haram”, among others.
At the Government House, Port Harcourt, the leader of the protesters, Barrister Anyakwee Asirimovu, said that the protesters were demanding the immediate release of the kidnapped female students.
Nsirimovu also said that government must act and act decisively, stressing that to overcome the evil of Boko Haram, the government and the security agencies must be up and doing.
While stressing that the country has the resources to solve its problems, he said that this was no time for excesses, stressing that the government must not shy away from its responsibilities of providing security and jobs for the people.
Also speaking, Mrs Emem J. Okon of Kebetkache Development and Resource Centre, said that the Federal Government must step up effort to ensure that the kidnapped students returned as the kidnapped female students have a right to life and good education.
According to her, both the Federal and Borno State governments must take responsibility for the continuous abduction of the students.
The protesters later handed over copies of their petition to the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for onward transmission to the Federal Government.
Responding, the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. George Feyii said that the development posed serious concern to all parents in the state, stressing that government was doing its best to ensure the release of the kidnapped students.
He also said that the state will collaborate with the Federal Government and sister states to bring back the students to their rightful parents.
