Kaduna Earmarks N4bn To Combat Environmental Challenges
Kaduna State Commis
sioner for Environment, Alhaji Lawal Kasimu, has said that over N4 billion was earmarked by the government this year to combat environmental challenges.
Kasimu told newsman in Zaria, Kaduna State, that the money was for the evacuation of refuse, clearance of waterways, tackling desert encroachment and other environmental problems.
“I cannot precisely state the exact amount but I believe government had earmarked over N4 billion to effectively check environmental challenges.
“Tackling environmental challenges is an enormous task that not only requires huge amount of money but also cooperation and support of all and sundry.
“It is the responsibility of my ministry to ensure safe and healthy environment, hence the need for us to redouble efforts to achieve the set goals and objectives,” he said.
The commissioner advised the people to desist from blocking waterways, promising that government would collaborate with community based associations at ward levels to drain all waterways across the state.
“I want people to understand that blocking of waterways is one of the main causes of flood which may lead to loss of lives and property, building collapse and spread of diseases among others.
“Government intends to involve various development associations at ward levels across the state to adequately clear the waterways to prevent possible flood especially as the rainy season commences,” he said.
Kasimu said also that the state government would soon introduce a “waste to wealth programme’’ through the establishment of refuse recycling plants.
He said the aim was to “improve citizens’ revenue base apart from ensuring a healthier environment”.
The commissioner appealed to the people to play complimentary roles toward ensuring clean and tidy environment habitable to all.
