KadunaWarns Against Refuse Dumping In Waterways
The Kaduna State
Government on Saturday called on residents of the state to stop dumping refuse in waterways to avoid flooding.
Mr Kasimu Abubakar, the Commissioner for Environment, made the call while speaking with newsmen in Kaduna after the monthly sanitation held across the state.
He said that people must be enlightened against dumping of refuse on water ways to avoid possible flooding.
“People gather refuse in front of their houses and when it is raining they push the refuse into the drain which blocks the drain system.
“Water cannot be blocked; once you attempt to block it, it will certainly create another way.“
“Preparations are on the way to ensure that drain system across the state are being cleared before the rain commences fully so as to have a flood-free state in 2014.
“The ministry is committed to ensuring that all the contractors are up and doing in clearing refuse every day, “ he said.
The commissioner said people should put their refuse at the dump sites provided by government so that refuse collectors could collect them.
The District Head of Angwar Television, Mr Ishaku Yaro, pleaded with the state government to remove refuse from the highways which made vehicular movement very difficult whenever it rained.
He said that efforts were being always made by the youths in the community to clear the drainage but that the rain took it back.
“This is beyond the efforts of the community that is why we are calling for assistance from the government on prompt removal of the refuse. “ he said.
