RSSDA: Driving The Rivers Education Dream
The vision of the Rivers State Government
in setting up the Rivers State Sustainable
Development Agency, RSSDA, to fast-track development in a number of sectors particularly, the education sector which was in dire need of resuscitation is clearly yielding the desired results.
The RSSDA which has its hands in many pies, including agriculture is, no doubt, the toast of students seeking quality education as it sends about 300 Rivers youth annually to study in different universities in the United Kingdom and Canada. The wisdom in this is already evident by the number of youth that have completed their programmes in flying colours.
The latest graduation of 11 Rivers Students, including four physically challenged young people posted eight first class. Reacting to the good news, the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mr Joe Poroma described the performance of the students as a great honour to the people and government of the state.
No one is in doubt about the determination of the present administration to rejuvenate the education sector both in terms of infrastructure and content The Commitment to ensuring that youth in the state have opportunities, including overseas scholarships to prove their mettle is commendable.
Indeed, the performance of the students even with the poor academic standard in Nigeria is indicative of the fact that Rivers youth can hold their own academically in any clime.
The Tide believes that one of the success factors may have been the transparent process of selecting right and indeed the serious-minded students for the award. It also shows that Rivers state has hardworking young people who can overcome the impediments of their background and excel academically by making first class in the UK among students from other parts of the world.
It is therefore very clear that the objective of the state government in its plan to make a clear statement in improving the fortunes of the education sector by a radical departure from the past is yielding expected results.
The Tide wishes to place on record, the building of model primary and secondary schools across the state, where the academic content would also be comparable to the highest standards anywhere in the world. This, of course, is intended to create a pool of quality manpower for any sector of the economy.
Indeed, the construction of a new campus for the Rivers State University of Science and Technology which is also geared towards improving standards at the level of tertiary education in the state cannot go unnoticed. The outcome of this multi-pronged attack on the deplorable standard of education can be transformative.
On the whole, the RSSDA deserves commendation for the successes it is posting at the various fronts particularly, in education and agriculture. The opportunity it has provided indigent youths to actualise their dreams through the fertile imagination and vision of the Rt Hon Chubuike Rotimi Amaechi government cannot be forgotten in a hurry.
We are happy that the award of overseas scholarship that was one of the strategies used by the leaders of the state to build the state immediately after its creation could be brought back. It simply shows that the state is being re-built to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Even so, we expect that beneficiaries of this wonderful gesture would be more appreciative than beneficiaries of the first campaign. More than anyone else, these lucky lot should be seen to be patriotic and always willing to contribute to the peace and development of Rivers State at any time.
