Soyinka Lists Benefits Of PH World Book Capital
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has commended the Rivers State Government for winning to host the World Book Capital next year, as he stressed that both the state and the country will benefit from the festival.
Prof Soyinka made his views public in a chat with newsmen in Government House, Port Harcourt, Monday, saying he was in the state to pledge support to the festival.
According to him, the World Book Capital will spark literary activities and attract intellectual tourism in the state,” adding that certain infrastructure will be left behind. There will be in transportation, hotel facilities, because the whole world is coming to your door steps’’.
He also said even catering businesses will boom including lots of literary activities- publishing, book sales and building of libraries. Besides that, he observed that the psychology of teachers and students will be boosted.
With such activities, the professor of literature is of the opinion that terrorism and violence can be curbed through educational activities, pointing out that a country with high illiteracy levels breeds sinister groups like the Boko Haram.
Soyinka suggested that the slogan Boko Halal be adopted as a campaign slogan for the World Book Capital,’’ when they say Boko Haram, we say Boko Halal explaining that Halal means virtue, goodness and peace.
Asked of his view on the political developments in Rivers State, he opined that as a citizen of the country he has the right to comment hence he was worried over happenings in the state.
His words,”…I am very much concerned about the imbroglio which the state appears to be at the moment. My main comment is for heaven’s sake, whatever happens internally between parties and so on; please don’t debase or manipulate the judiciary. That is my appeal to the governance at all levels”.
On his view of the grounding of Rivers State Governors aircraft by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA), Soyinka said that the action smacks of “pettiness” which is not expected in a democracy like Nigeria.
