NIMASA Assures On Transparency
The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr Patrick Akpobolokemi, says it would make accountability, transparency and prudent management his watchwords in line with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2011.
Akpobolokemi said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos after a training programme for staff of the agency on the FOI Act.
The statement said that the training was in line with Section 13 of the FOI Act which made it mandatory to train pubic officers on information dissemination.
“The Act mandates every government or public institution to provide appropriate training for its officials on the public’s right to access information held by public institutions for effective implementation of the Act,’’ it said.
“The current Board and Management of the agency are working hard to fulfil its mandate of making Nigeria a major maritime nation.
“The Director General and his team are committed to ensuring that we achieve safe, secure shipping, cleaner oceans and enhance maritime capacity in line with best global practices toward Nigeria’s economic development.
“This is our mandate, this is our goal and this is what NIMASA is working for everyday and we will not rest on our oars to achieve them.
“In the course of delivering on this mandate, accountability and transparency remain our watchwords,’’ the statement said.
The statement said that the training was organised by Ships & Ports Communication Company Ltd.
It added that the resources persons include prominent maritime lawyers like Mr. Mike Igbokwe (SAN), Mr. Emeka Akabogu, Mrs. Yinka Akanji and a maritime journalist, Mr. Bolaji Akinola.
“About 30 staff of NIMASA drawn from various departments and units took part in the training,’’ the statement said.
