FRSC Plans Mobile Courts In Rivers
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Rivers State
said on Tuesday that it would set up four mobile courts to prosecute traffic
offenders during the ember months.
The sector commander
in the state, Dr. Kayode Olagunju said this in an interview with The Tide in
Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, during the official visit of the commission’s Zonal
Commander in charge of Zone 6, Mr Yakubu Attah.
Olagunju said that the courts would be set up in Port
Harcourt, Eleme, Isiokpo and Ahoada.
According to him, the
command had already contacted the state’s Chief Judge to assist it with
personnel to man the courts.
“The essence is to have quick dispensation of justice, to
let people also know that when they commit traffic offences , we will not be
willing to spare any traffic violator adding that we also want people to know
that this is the period of the year when we will be willing to get some people
prosecuted for certain offences, like drunkenness.
“ We have observed that a lot of people take local gin and
they want to drive. We have acquired the necessary facilities to test the blood
alcohol concentration level or the alcohol in breath level.’’
Olagunju noted that the command would use churches, mosques
and stakeholders to carry out enlightenment campaigns on the need to ensure
safe road consciousness during the ember months and beyond.
“We want them to know that we all must take our safety more
seriously during this period.
“I also want to sound a note of warning that some people may
spend their Christmas and New Year in jail because those who overload their
vehicles, dangerous driving, fake number plates, fake drivers licence , we will
prosecute them and they stand the risk of being jailed for six months.’’
He said that the command had intensified efforts at
sensitising the people on the need to use its toll free 122 phone facility for
emergency calls.
He stated that the
commission’s call centre in Abuja had the capacity to track all patrol vehicles
in the country and deploy them to accident scene.
