Enthusiast Calls For Grassroots Sports Competitions
A veteran footballer and sports enthusiast, Alabo Ransome Amaso, the Opu-Ala II of Bille Kingdom, Rivers State, has reiterated the need for increased activity in the organisation of grassroots sports competition in the state.
Alabo Amaso, in a chat with Tidesports during one of the matches of the on-going Rivers State All Stars Premier League said that grassroots sports is the foundation for success in state, national and international competitions.
He said that the re-introduction of school sports, inter-street games, Local Government Chairmen’s Cup, Governor’s Cup, Youths Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) Cup Competition and Port Harcourt Amatear Football Association (PHDAF) among others would help the state and indeed the country in the quest to hunt for talents that could make the country proud.
According to him, the state is abound with budding talents that are yet to be tapped due to lack of platforms. He added that for the state to excel in sports, including football, priority should be given to grassroots sports.
The Sports enthusiast noted that such games would also help curb youth restiveness, stressing that it would engage the youths and prevent then from indulging anti-social activities. “Sports has become a source of livelihood in the world today,” he stated.
